3.5 million Swiss francs to improve the consistency of 160,000 displaced people, refugees and local meetings in Eastern Sudan
The Swiss government has signed the United Nations Development Program in Sudan (UNDP) of an agreement worth 3.5 million Swiss francs to improve the capacity of people, refugees and guest companies in internal to resist East Sudan.
This new partnership arrives at a time when Sudan faces one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with 30 million people to help, while the number of displaced people is around 10 million people.
The project, entitled “Improving the ability of displaced, refugees and hosting host communities to resist Sudan in East”, will support around 160,000 people by improving food security and means of gaining livelihoods, developing access to clean water and sustainable energy and improving social cohesion. The project includes the states of Kassala, Qadarf and the Red Sea, and depends on the regional approach adopted by the United Nations Development Program for the integration of humanitarian relief with early resumption and long -term development.
“This contribution confirms Switzerland’s commitment to find permanent solutions that go beyond the emergency response. We are proud to support an approach that addresses the radical causes of fragility, improves peace and allows local communities – in particular women and young people – to draw their future themselves,” said Catherine Face, head of cooperation in Switzerland (acting.
The project will work in three main interventions: agricultural production and fish traps, drinking water and renewable energies, the construction of peace and the resolution of disputes in local communities.
The project will contribute to the restoration of agricultural production and fish fishing by providing seeds, tools, livestock and climate -resistant training. Oppying opportunities will be created outside the agricultural sector through subsidies for small projects, “criticism for work” and skills development programs, especially for women and young people.
To improve access to drinking water and renewable energies, the project will provide solar and water irrigation systems, which reduces dependence on fossil fuels. The solar energy sets for lighting and shipping in families will also be distributed, as well as the installation of solar lighting posts in vital sites to reduce the risk of violence based on sex, in addition to providing schools and clinics with solar energy.
The project will create societal committees for resource management and conflict resolution, or will strengthen them. These committees will include women, young people and representatives of local groups and will support peacebuilding efforts through community forums and events.
The project is implemented by the United Nations Program for Development in Cooperation with Local Organizations, Government Institutions and other partners, with the financing of Switzerland, as well as the contributions of Italy and Japan and internal resources of the United Nations Development Program. The total budget of the initiative is $ 8.78 million.
“The war has caused enormous human sufferings, but the answer can not only depend on humanitarian aid, which will not be sufficient to monitor the rate of the size of the crisis. We must invest in solutions for early recovery and development that would reduce dependence on aid. This partnership with Switzerland allows us to support societies.”
