The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned of more than 50 pests threatening date palms in the Near East and North Africa region, which produces 90 % of world dates.
The organization confirmed in a recent report that the severity of these pests ranges from mild, causing limited damage, to severe, which can lead to crop damage and reduced production.
FAO has warned about the red palm weevil, which is considered one of the most dangerous pests of palm trees, as its larvae feed on the palm trunk from the inside, leading to its weakness and falling possible. Highlighting the danger of date palm dubas, which secrete a sticky honey-like substance that hampers the photosynthesis process and deforms date fruits.
The report highlights the need to control other pests, such as the midge, which feeds on palm leaves, the dust spider, which causes leaves to dry out and fall, and the large date worm, which feeds on date fruits and causes them to fall. Shame.
FAO called on countries to intensify their efforts to combat these pests, by implementing monitoring and integrated pest management programs, and raising awareness of the importance of following good agricultural practices and using pesticides safely and effectively.
