The periphery of the African Union – the face of the truth – ✍️ Ibrahim Shaqlawi

After more than three years of freezing, it seems that Sudan is about to return to the African Union, motivated by a certain number of political and diplomatic transformations that have started to produce more positions of understanding the continental community towards the Sudanese crisis. This yield is inseparable from regional and international contexts, because it reflects a conflict that gathers between efforts to establish the national state and tries to bypass it. In this article, we review the indicators of this possible return and the contexts which make it a need to speed up the transition.
In recent months, Sudan has been about to return to the African Union, after more than three years of suspension of its members after the procedures of October 25, 2021. This possible return is read in the context of a reflection of transformations in the Sudanese political scene and the interaction of various indicators and regional and international data surrounding.
On May 19, 2025, President Al -Barhan appointed Dr. Kamel Al -Tayeb Idris as Prime Minister, in a decision described in a certain number of international declarations as a positive sign to restore the constitutional path. The chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssef, praised this appointment and considered him a step towards a government which could contribute to creating a political environment for a complete civil transition, according to what has been stated in an official declaration published by the Commission published by international media, including Reuters.
This development came in the context of a diplomat full of Sudanese movements aimed at rebuilding trusted bridges with the African Union, which clearly emerged last week thanks to the official participation of Sudan in the event of the “African Day” at the union’s headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Participation included a remarkable Sudanese cultural pavilion, and it was the first since the freezing decision in October 2021, and he received clear attention from African leaders, notably the head of the Union Commission and the Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and confirmed the media coverage of the “BBC Africa” network.
The Summit of the Renaissance of Peace and Security of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region, which recently held in the Ugandan city of Anteby, adopted a special element under the title “Solidarity with Sudan” in its final declaration. The declaration indicated in support of the Sudanese government’s roadmap, affirming the sovereignty of Sudan and rejecting the solutions imposed abroad, which is a formula which carries a hidden conviction of any direct regional intervention, in particular those practiced by certain countries to support the militia.
The official media, such as Al -Hharq, reported declarations by the Sudanese participating delegation led by Malik Aqar, in which he accused the United Arab Emirates of supporting the rebellious quick support militia and asked to stop the support he provided.
But the most important transformation of the relationship with the organization represented the visit of the African Peace and Security Council at the Sudan Port in October 2024, led by Ambassador Mohamed Gad, Egyptian ambassador to the Union. This visit was considered, according to observers, the most important station on the path of normalization of relations between Sudan and the continental organization. The importance of this visit comes from the first since the start of the war, and that it also represented an implicit recognition of the Union that it is necessary to review its previous positions towards Sudan, in particular after the president expressed proof of the firm position of the description by the union of what happened in October 2021, considering that Sudan is confronted with proxy colonization by a regional rebel
During this meeting, Al -Burhan indicated that part of the country “is under the occupation of a rebellious militia supported by foreign mercenaries”, a description which found its way to internal discussions of the Council, according to leaks from the Journal of Jeune Africa in its coverage on May 26, 2025.
Ambassador Mohamed Jad at the time, in the statements made to international media, including the “Al -hadath” channel, said that the delegation had affected a generalized understanding of the necessity for Sudan to restore its composition, because it is a fundamental condition for supporting peace efforts and opening the cooperation canals, emphasizing that the visit establishes a “new Sudan return to the date of the African system.
These transformations coincide with the continuous violations committed by the rapid support militia, according to human rights and international organizations, in particular “Human Rights Watch”, which documented in recent relationships that these forces have committed war crimes in the states of Darfur and Kordofan. The latest convictions were published yesterday by the US State Department, following the Militia, an installation of the World Food Program in Darfur, because the US Treasury previously imposed sanctions on its leader, Muhammad Hamdan Daglo, and seven of its companies which are based in the United Arab Emirates.
This, according to what we see from the face of the truth, the restoration by Sudan of its siege in the African Union will be the culmination of a major political and diplomatic transformation, and a real success of the African Union by leaving the site of “The Decrendic Observer” and the transformation into a real partner in the restoration of security and peace in Sudan. Consequently, the next few days will be decisive in determining the nature of the relationship between Sudan and the African Union. As if it were done, Khartoum will have been an important way to restore its position as a pivotal country on the African continent.
