It is located in central Sudan and is considered one of the largest industrial cities in Sudan. It is located in the middle of an agricultural project that bears its name, namely the Al-Manaqil Extension Agricultural Project, which constitutes the largest part of the agricultural project. It has been said about the origin of the name Al-Manaqil that it derives from the word Manaqil, which means people with authority or royalty (and its singular form is Al-Manaqil, which is the leader or king), like the Manaqils from the surrounding regions and their leaders would meet from time to time at the place where Al-Manaqil is now based and publish their official correspondence, which bore a written seal. It had the pronunciation (manjil) and the jīm was distorted into one. Sudanese Qāf, pronounced like Egyptian jīm maṭṣṭa. There is another interpretation of the meaning of the word and its origin, as the name “mancala” is said to come from the word “mancala”, which is a popular game in the central regions of Sudan. The region was called “mancala”. » because it was made up of several furqans and villages geographically close to each other, in the same position as the pieces of the popular game of mancala.
It is said that it got its name because its inhabitants frequently moved from one place to another.
The history of the region dates back around five centuries and among the oldest villages are Koqila village, Al-Dasis village and Wad Nafi' Al-Arkiyin village, founded by Sheikh Ali Wad Nafi. It is home to the oldest cemetery in which Sheikh Hussein Bashbasha, one of the Sufi symbols of the region, is buried.
The Al-Manaqil region included the leaders and symbols of Sufism in Sudan, where the guides of the Samani order taught in its villages, and ancient archaeological cemeteries are widespread there, especially in the villages of the Al-Manaqil region. Al-Rakal, located between the town of Al-Manaqil and the town of Jabal Muwayya, which dates back to the time of the Alwa Kingdom.
The Al-Manaqil region witnessed the launch of the oldest political alliance between the Al-Abdlab and Funj tribes, and the tribes of the Daqis region south of Al-Manaqil, where King Amara Dengus, chief of the Funj tribes, emerged from the Saqdi, south of Al-Manaqil, and the leader of Al-Abdlab Abdullah Jama'a came there from the east of the Blue Nile, and they met in the Jabal region Muya, near there. From there they left with their armies for other parts of Sudan and founded the state of Sinnar, known as the Blue Sultanate, in 1504 AD, with its capital, Sinnar, dominating most parts of the Sudan.
The region has a long history of struggle, since Sheikh Amer Al-Makashfi declared jihad against the rule of the Turks in the Umm Hajjar region of Al-Manaqil and prevented citizens from paying homage to them. In the Umm Sneita region, south of Al-Manaqil, a revolution broke out, known as the Wadkarf revolution.
Al-Manaqil was chosen in 1951, during the second Anglo-Egyptian rule of Sudan and some years before Sudan's independence, to be an administrative center and a British inspector was appointed for the purpose. This was accompanied by an urban renaissance that included neighborhood buildings that began using fixed building materials, and the main market, which was transformed from a weekly market held on Sundays and Wednesdays into a market permanent.
The city was also urbanized and its neighborhoods were divided into squares. Before 1955 AD, the city consisted of only three districts: Wadnafi', Al-Dasis and Ataqi. It then expanded to include the following neighborhoods: Al-Zubayr, Kashkush, Al-Kalakla, Rifa'a, Al-Munawara, Taiba. , Wad Al-Shaqal, Ataq Al-Ja'alien and Wad Al-Muslimi, Dar Nayel, Umm Talha and Koqila.
Al-Manaqil experienced an economic and social boom with the establishment of the Al-Manaqil Agricultural Extension Project in 1962 AD. The project is considered one of the purely national facilities and has made the region a mini-homeland in which Sudanese of different colors and colors live. the ethnic groups came together, so that the city expands and grows with its inhabitants and those who arrive there and becomes a real refuge for those fleeing war and poverty.
