To the responsible press: a specific budget between freedom and security – something for the fatherland – ✍️ Mr. Salah Gharib

In our world today, in which the frequency of information accelerates, freedom of expression has become an essential pillar of any democratic society. But this freedom is not absolute; This requires careful balance with national security requirements and the protection of society’s values. Consequently, the decision of the Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism to form a Committee to review the Press Act and the publications for the year 2009 is acquired, especially since this decision comes in response to the recommendations of a workshop organized under the slogan: “Media Freedom With Professional Standards”.
What distinguishes this stage is its exhaustiveness and its assimilation of developments in the media scene. Although the press in the past is limited to paper publications, we note today that digital media has become the engine of public opinion, through information sites, social media platforms and content manufacturers. Consequently, the importance of expanding the definition of “journalist” to include manufacturers of digital content, which reflects a deep understanding of the reality of the new media.
However, with this expansion, new responsibilities are coming. The digital space, despite the opportunities it offers, has also become a fertile environment for the spread of hate speeches, rumors and false news that threaten social peace and cohesion of the national fabric. Consequently, the importance of committee’s tasks is obvious to establish a complete national strategy for electronic publication, not only surveillance, but also focuses on the quality of the content and the fight against rumors by developing mechanisms to check the news.
The proposal to establish an independent professional advice to regulate journalistic activity is a central step towards the self-control of the profession. Instead of relying on government interventions which can be understood as an abolition of freedoms, this council is responsible for the establishment of professional and ethical standards and the protection of the press against any violation. This approach improves the credibility and independence of the media.
Alignment between freedom of expression and the necessities of national security is not an easy task, but rather requires wisdom and balance. Security is not only measured by laws, but rather the extent of the consciousness of society and the awareness of the risks imposed by irresponsible content. In this context, the committee’s task in preparing journalists’ training programs in the fields of national security is of great importance, because it aims to improve their understanding of sensitive national issues and to provide them with the necessary tools to manage them with responsibility and professionalism.
In short, the decision to train this committee represents a gesture of hope to build a healthy media environment in Sudan, where freedom of expression is not incompatible with security and stability. It is an invitation to everyone, including the media and citizens, to participate in the formulation of a media future which serves the public interest and improves the values of peace and unity at a critical stage of the history of the country. Will this committee succeed in translating the recommendations of the workshop into a tangible reality which protects freedoms and improves responsibilities?
