Fleeing in search of life and hope far from home – Something for the homeland – ✍️ Mr. Salah Ghariba

The world celebrates World Refugee Day on June 20 each year, to mark the suffering of millions of people who have been forced to flee their countries because of wars and persecution. In its 2024 report, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees publishes a report entitled “Hope far from home: a world that still includes refugees”, calling for solidarity with them and improving their opportunities for integration into host communities.

Sudan is one of the countries most affected by forced displacement, since conflict broke out in April 2023, leading to the displacement of more than 6 million people within the country, while 1.2 million Others have fled to neighboring countries, including Egypt, and those coming from post-war Sudan to Egypt face many challenges, from informal entry across borders to difficulties in obtaining residence and work, through the lack of basic services.

Many Sudanese are forced to enter Egypt unofficially through the land border, putting them at grave risk of exploitation by smugglers and human traffickers, not to mention the risk to be arrested, injured, or even killed. The situation of women and children particularly increases during this arduous journey, where they are exposed to human rights violations,

The suffering does not end when crossing the border, but rather begins a new journey fraught with pitfalls in Egypt, including difficulties obtaining residency and work. The majority of those who arrived after the war face difficulties obtaining legal status in Egypt, limiting their options. opportunities to work legally and obtain their fundamental rights. Some suffer from insufficient and quality access to education, health care and adequate housing. Some, and I repeat, some, are exposed to discrimination and marginalization from certain members of Egyptian society.

The suffering of the Sudanese after the war in Egypt is a shared responsibility of the international community, governments and organizations. The international community must increase its financial assistance to support the host country, Egypt, in its refugee integration efforts. must develop policies that support refugees, facilitating their access to residence, work and basic services. Humanitarian organizations play an important role in providing humanitarian assistance to refugees and providing them with education, training and rehabilitation opportunities despite the many challenges they face. , some Sudanese have the hope of returning, of seeing normal life return to Sudan when conditions are favorable, and some are striving to rebuild a new life in Egypt,

World Refugee Day is an opportunity to remember the suffering of millions of people who have been forced to leave their homes and to call on the international community to work to resolve humanitarian crises and improve opportunities for the integration of refugees into host communities.
