1920 – The Ottoman Empire abolishes its sovereignty over Palestine and recognizes the British Mandate over it. The Treaty of Sèvres is signed between the Ottoman Empire and the Allied Forces, following World War I. The agreement stipulated that Hejaz, Armenia, and Kurdistan would gain independence and demarcated the borders between Syria and Iraq on the one hand and Turkey on the other.
1922 – The Constitution of Palestine was announced by the British Mandatory Authority. The Constitution provided for the establishment of a Legislative Council consisting of 22 members, including 6 English and 4 Jews, and the election of 8 Muslims, 2 Christians and 2 Jews, headed by the High Commissioner. The Palestinians boycotted the election of the Council.
