The Federal Ministry of Health has launched the 2024 Operational Plan for the AIDS and Tuberculosis Control Programme in Kassala State, organized by the National AIDS and Tuberculosis Control Programme of the Federal Ministry of Health in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme under the Kassala Health Programme. The representative of the Director General of the Ministry of Health in Kassala State, Shaa El-Din Hamza Al-Hussein, confirmed that the two programs to combat AIDS and tuberculosis are of importance to the ministry, especially since the state is a border state, which contributes to the intensity of the movements, given that the state recorded the highest AIDS infection rates in Sudan after the secession of the State of South Sudan, and that the ministry is making every effort to combat the two diseases and provide them with adequate care, despite the lack of capacity, in addition to the challenges of cholera, watery diarrhea and eye inflammation, he continued, affirming that with the partners and the two national programs, we will succeed in defeating these diseases.
The Director of the National AIDS Control Program, Dr. Mazen Al-Mubarak, in a press release, said that the presence in Kassala to support the activities of the seventh session of global support to provide prevention services to the most vulnerable groups, indicating that the meeting inaugurated the Kassala operational plan for the two programs in 2024, and aims to strengthen cooperation and coordination between partners present in the state to implement comprehensive support activities.
The representative of the National Tuberculosis Control Program, Dr. Najla Hamad, the meeting aims to unite the efforts of the government and international and local organizations to increase the rate of detection and treatment of infected cases, especially since it is a rapidly spreading infectious disease, linked to living conditions and health status, and due to the conditions left by the war, citizens found themselves below the poverty line.
The representative of the United Nations Development Programme, Dr. Hassan Awadallah, said that the operational plan is fully funded by the programme, noting that 90% of the support for tuberculosis is provided by the Global Support Fund. He added that interventions against the two diseases begin with prevention, detection of new cases and placement. He pledged to respond to the requests of the Association of People Living with AIDS, praising its members and their solidarity among themselves in the delivery of medicines.
The director of the National Health Insurance Fund, Kassala branch, ordered that people living with AIDS and tuberculosis be included in the insurance, while adhering to all the directives of the Fund, calling for the inclusion of specialists in pulmonology and internal medicine in the operational plan, stressing that the increase in cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, especially among random search workers, requires a pause, especially since they are young people.
The representative of the Sudanese Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS announced that the association was ready to contribute to raising awareness in the community, by pushing a series of demands, including contributing to the construction of a headquarters for the association on land that it owns, in addition to placing the rest of its members under the health insurance cover, especially since only 35% of them have a health insurance card. The total number has reached 766 members, stressing that there are problems in carrying out office work.
