Statement by His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan Abdel Rahman, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, in response to the statement by His Excellency President Joe Biden
We have reviewed the statement issued on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, by the President of the United States of America, His Excellency Joe Biden, regarding the situation in Sudan. On behalf of the Government of Sudan and the Sudanese people, I welcome President Biden’s expression of concern and appreciate the United States’ support for humanitarian efforts in Sudan and neighboring countries. We share his deep concern about the human cost of the ongoing conflict, which has caused untold suffering and hardship for the Sudanese people.
The Government of Sudan remains fully committed and determined to end the suffering of our citizens. We are determined to deploy our efforts to end the current conflict swiftly and decisively and to ensure the restoration of peace, security and stability throughout the country. Our goal is not simply to end the violence, but to do so in a manner that lays the foundation for a lasting peace, a peace that addresses the root causes of instability and promotes long-term unity and reconciliation among all Sudanese.
What President Biden mentioned about the systematic and widespread attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces militia against El Fasher reflects only a small part of the atrocities committed by this criminal militia in other parts of Sudan. The Sudanese Armed Forces remain firmly committed to the principles of international humanitarian law and the customs of war, including the protection of civilians. Our actions are deeply rooted in Sudan’s cultural and ethical values, which emphasize the protection of civilian lives and the preservation of our nation’s rich heritage. In contrast, the actions of the Rapid Support Forces militias demonstrate a complete disregard for human life, civilian infrastructure, and Sudan’s ancient cultural heritage, which dates back to the Kushite and Meroitic civilizations. The international community must not only condemn these heinous crimes, but also hold accountable those states that continue to support and enable the militias’ destructive behavior.
The Sudanese government remains open to all constructive efforts to end this devastating war. We stand ready to work with all international partners to achieve a peaceful solution that will alleviate the suffering of our people and put Sudan on a path to security, stability, the rule of law, and the democratic transfer of power. I look forward to furthering these discussions with American officials when I participate in the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly next week.
