Al -Nahda Dam and Gedaref Smice: an environmental and healthy threat to Sudanese national security

Since the beginning of the Ethiopian Renaissance dam, it has appeared in the state of Gedaref in East Sudan, environmental phenomena which were not previously familiar, in particular the strong spread of mice and agricultural pests. This transformation is no longer just a local problem concerning farmers, but has rather become a national security problem which affects food and health security of Sudan. Mouses are not only an agricultural injury, but rather a dangerous transporter of diseases, and history has proven that the spread of rodents was behind major health disasters in the world, like the black plague that swept Europe in the Middle Ages.
First: the relationship between the Renaissance dam and the propagation of mice
The Renaissance dam has led to fundamental changes in the Hydrological System of Blue:
1. The disappearance of seasonal floods that flooded and washed the land each year, which naturally reduced the number of rodents.
2. Stability of the water level and the absence of a silt in certain regions, offering an ideal environment for mice, locusts and mosquitoes.
3. The migration of the rodents of the Ethiopian hills towards wider land, especially since the border of the dam is only 14 k
Second: the economic danger
Gedaref is Sudan’s food basket with corn, sesame and cotton.
The conquest of mice has led each year to the destruction of thousands of agricultural acres, which reduced production and increased prices.
These losses threaten the income of farmers and increase the suffering of citizens under difficult economic conditions. With the crushing war accompanied by an economic war to destroy the local currency
If the situation continues without treatment, Sudan can become dependent on importation to guarantee its food, which opens the door to external political pressure.
Third: healthy danger and disease transmission
Mice are historically known as an epidemic warehouse:
In the Middle Ages, he caused the “black plague” which killed a third of the population of Europe.
The mice transmit diseases such as:
Democratic Plague (still appears in certain regions of the world).
Hemorrhagic fever.
Tefus.
Salmonella and food poisoning.
Lashmania and parasitic diseases.
Given the weakness of the health structure in East Sudan, any epidemiological caused by mice can lead to a human disaster.
Fourth: how to fight this scourge
To cope with the danger of mice in Gedaref, there must be a complete national plan which includes:
1. Biological control: The introduction of natural mouse enemies such as cats or certain birds of prey.
2. Chemical control: the use of pesticides and organized and thoughtful traps to reduce their number.
3. Improve and update old agricultural stocks by storing buttons in new Silns sealed in localities to prevent mice from reaching them.
4. Consciousness of farmers: how to protect their cultures and homes against the infiltration of rodents.
5. Establish a national antiparasitic control center in agricultural production states, in particular Gedaref.
Fifth: the strategic dimension
If this problem continues to be ignored, the mouse injury can turn into a strategic threat to national security.
The danger does not only concern food and the economy, but also on the health of citizens and the stability of society.
The treatment of this crisis needs cooperation between the ministries of agriculture, health, the environment, defense and the interior, because the problem has become more than local and regional borders
What is happening in Gedaref today is not only a natural coincidence, but rather a direct product of environmental changes, the most recent of which is the Renaissance dam. The propagation of mice thus prevents a dangerous step if it is not dealt with with a scientific plan and a joint national action. Perhaps history reminds us that the epidemics that the mice have been transmitted were able to change the face of whole continents. Do we expect the disaster or do we face the danger before he occurred?
