Cholera outbreak in 9 states, with 12,896 cases, 388 deaths, minister holds emergency meeting

Federal Minister of Health Dr Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim held an emergency meeting this Sunday morning in the emergency room of his office in Port Sudan.

The meeting reviewed reports on the epidemiological situation of cholera and interventions by various departments of the Federal Ministry of Health.

In a press statement after the meeting, the Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, explained that the meeting discussed the current health situation in the cholera-affected states, revealing that (9) states were affected by the disease (Kassala, Gedaref, Red Sea, Nile, Northern, Khartoum,

Al-Jazeera, White Nile, Sennar) with (54) localities, highlighting a total of (12,896) infections, including (388) deaths, highlighting a number of interventions to combat cholera, highlighting the challenges and problems hindering the work, highlighting the need to increase environmental health interventions. Food control and work on water chlorination, guided by the importance of raising awareness of the dangers of cholera and activating health promotion activities, in interventions within the framework of control.

The minister explained that there was an urgent meeting of the Supreme Committee for Health and Humanitarian Emergencies.

With the participation of all stakeholders to contribute to the fight against cholera and the increase in the response in the States, calling for unification of efforts and taking advantage of available capacities, emphasizing the importance of the role of the community, particularly in environmental sanitation, and working to mobilize it.

The minister said the meeting resulted in many recommendations, the most important of which is the launch of a major month-long cholera response campaign in cooperation with partners.
