480 – Odoacer, a soldier and statesman of barbarian origins, deposes the child emperor Romulus Augustulus and becomes the first king of Italy. Odoacer's deposition of Romulus is traditionally considered to mark the end of the Western Roman Empire as well as ancient Rome.
536 – Byzantine general Belisarius enters Rome unopposed during the Gothic War, and the Gothic garrison flees the capital.
914 – Dhaka the one-eyed enters Egypt at the head of the Abbasid army, sent by the caliph Abu al-Fadl Jaafar al-Muqtadir Billah, in order to repel the Fatimid threat from Egypt.
1917 – The United Kingdom occupies Jerusalem during World War I.
