Labor Day is one of the global opportunities with a deep human, social and economic dimension, because it is celebrated every year on May 1, and is known worldwide as “World Workers Day”. This day is devoted to the honor of the working class and to the appreciation of their contributions to the development and the economic and social Renaissance in various countries of the world. But behind this day, a story of struggle and sacrifices, which the workers fought through the ages in order to obtain their legitimate rights.
The origin and history of labor festival
The roots of the Labor Day date back to the end of the 19th century, especially in the United States of America. In 1886, a large protest movement broke out in the city of Chicago, where thousands of workers demanding the identification of daily work hours with eight hours instead of 12 or 14 hours, which was then common in factories and mines. This movement, known as “Heimark Strikes”, met with a violent repression of the police, and resulted in deaths and injuries, and a number of managers of the Labor Movement have been executed for fabricated accusations.
These events sparked a wave of anger and global sympathy, and the anniversary of these demonstrations has turned into a global symbol of workers’ struggle. In 1889, the second international conference in Paris announced the approval of May 1 on a world worker, to commemorate the demonstrations of Chicago and to call for social justice and humanitarian working conditions.
The importance of workers in the modern era
Labor Day is no longer just a historic anniversary of the workers’ struggle, but rather a world day to reflect on the work and the problems of workers. That day, problems such as: unemployment is highlighted, and they say that it is not enough for a quarter of the shadow of the deteriorated economist, high daily family needs, fair wages, working hours, social protection, working environment conditions, gender equality in employment opportunities and other human rights problems.
In the era of globalization and digital transformation, workers’ challenges have increased the chances of their insults, as competition has become more fierce, and temporary workers have extended, and new forms of work have appeared such as remote work and self-work. These transformations require a new approach to employment policies that take into account the balance between work flexibility and the guarantee of workers’ rights.
The role of labor day in the Arab world
In the Arab world, workers in most countries are celebrated, where official and popular activities are organized, in which skills are honored, and assessment prices are awarded to distinguished workers in various sectors, from agriculture, industry to education, health, basic health care, many Arab countries are always confronted with challenges in the field of workers, insufficient social protection and low stimulators and labor stimulators in rights. Consequently, labor festival is an opportunity to renew the call to reform labor policies, to empower unions and to achieve continuous economic and social justice
Work is a human and civilized value
Work is not only a means of gain, but rather an expression of self and an achievement of human dignity. It is in all civilizations, and in all religions, it is a source of honor and pride. In Islam, many verses and hadiths have been mentioned that work desires work, and connecting good deeds and worship, including the all-powerful saying: “And say:” Work, then God will see your work, your messenger and your believers “(Repent: 105).
A future look
Honoring workers should not limit themselves to one day a year, but rather to a general culture and a sustainable policy in all sectors. Efforts must be made to improve social insurance systems, provide continuous training to workers in order to monitor the pace of technological changes and ensure a safe and stimulating work environment.
Governments and educational establishments should also cultivate love of work, assess effort and respect all professions, far from class or social discrimination.
