World Environment Day 2024 is fast approaching as Sudan is going through exceptional circumstances that cast a shadow on various aspects of life, including the environment. The war that ravaged the country has left deep scars on the ground, and the restoration of Sudan's environment has become a shared responsibility for everyone, including the government, civil society institutions and individuals. Sudan faces serious environmental challenges that threaten its future, among others. , but not limited to, desertification which covers large areas of the country, resulting in loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, decline in agricultural productivity and pollution of rivers and lakes. agricultural waste, which threatens aquatic life and hinders its use for drinking and irrigation. Forests are being cut down at an alarming rate to meet energy and agricultural needs, leading to loss of biodiversity and soil erosion. climate change, such as droughts and floods, which negatively affect agricultural productivity and food security.

There is no doubt that reviving environmental activities in Sudan is a national responsibility that falls on everyone, and this can only be achieved through concerted efforts at different levels. The role of government is to develop effective environmental policies. policies that take into account the needs of sustainable development and preserve natural resources, the government must support projects aimed at rehabilitating desertified lands, planting trees and cleaning rivers. The government must educate citizens on the importance of protecting the environment and encourage them to adopt. environmentally friendly behavior.

The role of civil society is to implement environmental projects on the ground, such as tree planting and environmental cleaning projects. Civil society can raise environmental awareness through awareness campaigns and educational programs. government to develop effective environmental policies and their implementation.
