Seventy years of Sudanese-Russian relations… a solid history of cooperation and friendship

Sudan’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Muhammad al-Ghazali Siraj, affirmed that relations between Sudan and Russia rest on a solid foundation of mutual respect, equal sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs and exchange of interests on the basis of common benefit, noting that they are among the relations that have withstood regional and international transformations over seven decades.

The ambassador explained, in an article on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, that this occasion comes in light of the radical changes taking place in the world, which makes it more important to strengthen relations between friendly countries, stressing that Sudanese-Russian relations were characterized by broad cooperation in the economic, commercial, scientific, cultural and military fields, in addition to Russia’s continued support for Sudan in international forums.

He stressed that the establishment of diplomatic relations only five days after Sudan’s independence reflects the depth of ties and the importance of the two countries to each other, indicating that the convergence of political and economic visions and the important geopolitical situation of the two parties contributed to the construction of a stable relationship capable of transcending international polarization.

The article highlights the high-level visits made during the early years of relations and the development cooperation that resulted in the implementation of strategic projects in the fields of agriculture, industry and infrastructure, including grain silos, canning and drying factories for agricultural products and geophysical survey projects, in addition to cooperation in the military field.

The ambassador stressed that Russian positions since the outbreak of the crisis in Sudan in April 2023 embody the depth of friendship between the two countries, highlighting Moscow’s support for the legitimacy of the Sudanese state and its institutions, and its clear positions in international forums, including the use of its veto power in the Security Council to protect Sudan’s sovereignty and unity.

He explained that cooperation between the two countries gained new impetus after the war, represented by the convening of the first joint ministerial committee and the signing of economic and commercial cooperation protocols, opening broad horizons for Russia’s participation in Sudan’s reconstruction efforts.

The article also emphasizes cultural and educational cooperation, as thousands of Sudanese students received their education in Russia, in addition to the continuation of annual scholarships, Russian archaeological activity in Sudan and the creation of a specialized center for the study of Sudanese civilization in Russian universities.

The ambassador concluded his article by emphasizing that Sudanese-Russian relations represent a model of strong friendly relations based on common interests and mutual respect, expressing confidence in a more prosperous future for cooperation between the two countries in light of a multipolar international system.
