Shindi: FAO and Salam maize seeds meet needs of five thousand farmers
Shendi locality has received maize seeds from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Organization amounting to 59 tons of maize seeds, which covers the needs of five thousand farmers in an area of up to one hundred thousand acres spread over different areas of Shendi locality.
The executive director of Shindi locality, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar Al-Sheikh, said that Shindi plans to fill the deficit of many crops and compensate for areas that fell out of production in a number of Sudanese states due to the war.
He said that the great success achieved during the winter season and the high productivity achieved in onions, wheat, Egyptian beans and potatoes constitute the greatest motivation to achieve the same success in all summer crops and cover all targeted areas with rainfed agriculture.
He said the interest in agriculture comes from the fact that it is the backbone of the Sudanese economy.
For his part, the Director of the Department of Agriculture in Shindi locality, Engineer Muhammad Musa Al-Khader, said that cooperation with international and regional organizations would contribute to improving the agricultural production process and open new doors in the process of developing and increasing the productivity of acres through several means, including the implementation of agricultural technologies, mechanization and improved seeds.
