The environment in the Arab world between war, desertification and challenges of the future – Something for the homeland – ✍️ M. Dhalah Ghariba

The celebration of Arab Environment Day represents an annual opportunity to remember the serious environmental challenges facing the Arab world, which are exacerbated day by day due to the intersection of natural and human factors. As the world suffers from the effects of climate change, the Arab world faces additional challenges from water scarcity, land degradation and desertification, as well as conflicts and wars that exacerbate these problems and negatively affect the environment and societies.

The Arab world is witnessing rapid environmental deterioration, as deserts and drylands cover most of its land area, and rates of desertification and drought are increasing significantly. These challenges are leading to food and water shortages, increased migration and worsening public health.

Sudan represents a striking example of Arab countries suffering from serious environmental degradation. The country's ongoing war has led to the destruction of infrastructure, water and soil pollution, and increased desertification rates. Displacement and asylum have also led to additional pressure on natural resources in areas hosting displaced people and refugees.

Many reasons have led to environmental deterioration in the Arab world, the most important being climate change which is leading to rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns and an increase in extreme weather events such as drought and flooding, in addition to poor management. Natural resources such as excessive water use, deforestation and overfishing are all factors that contribute to land degradation. Conflicts and wars also lead to the destruction of infrastructure, environmental pollution and population displacement, which increases pressure on natural resources. Population growth leads to increased demand for natural resources, which increases pressure on the environment. Unsustainable development accounts focus on economic growth at the expense of environmental preservation.

The rehabilitation of degraded lands is considered one of the most important solutions to address the environmental challenges of the Arab world. It contributes to strengthening food security by increasing agricultural production and improving its quality, preserving biodiversity by restoring natural ecosystems, reducing desertification by stabilizing soils and reducing their erosion, and creating employment opportunities. by implementing land rehabilitation projects.

The League of Arab States plays a central role in responding to the environmental challenges facing the Arab region, by developing regional policies and strategies to protect the environment and address climate change, and by building capacity. Arab cadres in the field of environmental protection, while encouraging cooperation at the regional level, the Arab League strives to strengthen cooperation among Arab countries in the field of environmental protection.

To overcome the environmental challenges facing the Arab world, a range of urgent measures must be taken, including investing in renewable energy by moving towards renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions, by applying sustainable agriculture and encouraging farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices, such as organic farming and drip irrigation, and appropriate waste management by applying effective waste management systems, including recycling and safe disposal of hazardous waste, and enhancing environmental awareness by creating environmental awareness among all segments. of society, encouraging community participation in environmental protection and building capacity by investing in human capacity building in the area of environmental protection and natural resource management.

The environment in the Arab world faces major challenges that require concerted efforts at the regional and international levels. By adopting sustainable environmental policies, investing in green technologies and strengthening regional cooperation, we can protect our environment and preserve our natural resources for future generations.
