The Impact of War on Sudan's Water Atlas Strategy – The Face of Truth – ✍️ Ibrahim Shaqlawi
The Sudan Water Atlas is considered as a bank of information related to the drinking water strategy, which is based on the water supply of the Sudanese countryside through a comprehensive database and information on various drinking water sources, dams, excavations and underground wells. The program is developed and updated annually through monitoring, tracking and measuring rainwater levels in all states of Sudan. The Water Atlas, which aims to conduct a comprehensive information survey on drinking water sources in all states of Sudan, represents a solid basis. a reference and a good planning tool for the implementation of water-related projects, as the atlas works to explore, monitor and geographically distribute drinking water sources. It also allows field actors to periodically compare water production from water sources… through population figures, as well as the adequacy and quality of water sources for human, animal and agricultural consumption… As we have observed, the autumn of this year witnessed high rainfall rates… this is due to climate change that has affected large areas of the North African continent… As for Sudan, the impact of this fall has affected all states without exception… especially the northern states where unprecedented floods have occurred that have affected several areas, for example in the northern state of Wadi Halfa… the Ibri village area (Sarkimtu) and its surroundings.. Similarly, the locality of Merowe, the Tangasi area (Al-Ruwais), which was affected by the torrents of the Abu Doum stream.. Likewise, the area (Al-Ghaba).. which I witnessed the seasonal flow of streams. Also in the Nile State, torrential flows occurred in Abu Hamad and (Wadi Al-Salam… and Wadi (Al-Saqir) west of Al-Bawqa… and Wadi (Abu Hawiya) in Al-Kamar, the countryside of Wad Hamid, the locality of Al-Mattama… and the area (Abu Dulaiq) northeast of Bahri and east of the Nile in Khartoum State… these floods had disastrous effects on the population. ..as well as the Kaja Valley, which runs through the town of El Geneina in West Darfur State to Chad, and which flows into Lake Shari in Chad. All these valleys were filled with water to the brim. populated areas and villages. This led to the collapse of buildings, the displacement of the local population and damage to agricultural and pastoral wealth. In addition, environmental diseases and the emergence of epidemics. were avoided or reduced. These risks and losses.. if the competent authorities of the country were able to take the necessary precautions through a detailed study that includes hydrological aspects and design parameters.. and this by updating the water atlas. to update other information and disseminate specialized bulletins to raise awareness of potential risks… in addition to providing solutions through project proposals that take into account the geological formations and morphological characteristics of the plains and valleys for the coming periods… but unfortunately all of these works were interrupted due to the outbreak of war on April 15 last year following… The military coup d'état carried out by the rebel Rapid Support Forces in an attempt to control power… which resulted in the disruption of all development activity and the administrative activity of the State as well as the activity of international and humanitarian organizations… which continued to finance such projects… within the framework of the Millennium Development Projects for the year 2030 AD. The war also disrupted the updating of the Water Atlas, which could have facilitated the examination of the foundations of integrated water resources management, which includes flood management… and torrents… although the relevant authorities of the Sudanese Ministry of Irrigation, through the Izraha Dam Implementation Unit or the General Administration of Groundwater and Valleys, must take the necessary precautions for water revenues exceeding the capacities of the hydraulic sectors of rivers, streams, valleys and all watercourses, especially after the climatic phenomenon. change and the use of mathematical models and artificial intelligence to predict risks. The Ministry should therefore have assumed its responsibilities despite the war conditions… by reviewing all ferries and bridges as well as all engineering works related to water facilities. issue warning bulletins to citizens. The Sudanese reality related to the autumn season, as we know, is always renewed during the rainy, flooding and torrential season. It therefore remains important that all these water savings are transferred to the thirsty areas to benefit from them. and not to be left behind. To evaporate and be lost. As we know, the Sudanese countryside suffers from water shortage during the summer season. It is therefore important to exercise one's mind and read the future. to benefit from these seasonal resources through water harvesting dams that have been monitored through the water atlas.. so that the country can increase the agricultural area… especially we are talking, according to regional and international bulletins and media sources, of a significant. increase in rainfall rates throughout Sudan during this year and the coming years. It is therefore necessary to plan to make the most of this climate change. As there are more than ten million. An acre of virgin agricultural land represents high fertility plains. with a suitable climate. That is why, despite the war, we must hurry to exploit our water resources to preserve our inherent rights. We recall that there is the Entebbe Agreement, which can bring major changes if it is imposed as a fait accompli. it was imposed before it. (Renaissance Dam)… Our country, Sudan, must therefore benefit from its water wealth.. since it currently benefits from only 10% of the rainwater, and the rest of the water is lost as a result. of wastage, evaporation or leakage. Therefore, the face of the truth remains… in the importance of benefiting from this water in the implementation of agricultural and social development projects and rural development. The torrents and floods during this season have revealed a huge amount of water. resource.. This must be an incentive for stability, agricultural expansion and livestock production.. Therefore, this must occur in times of war so that we do not allow it by disabling the Water Atlas Strategy update or disabling development.
May you always be well.;
