The potential effects of the war in Sudan on climate change – The face of truth – ✍️ Ibrahim Shaqlawi

The war in Sudan is considered one of the most violent conflicts that have caused major changes in the environment and climate in the region, especially since the United Nations Environment Agency (UNEP) had previously warned of climate change likely to affect rainfall rates in sub-Saharan Africa. Africa and the Horn of Africa. Several sessions were held in cooperation with local organizations and study centers in Khartoum in February 2023, before the outbreak of war in mid-April of the same year. The IGAD Center for Climate Forecasting and Applications, a regional center affiliated with the World Meteorological Organization in East Africa, also warned of rains and climate change in the region, respectively. This war therefore has vast impacts which are not limited. social and economic impacts only, but go beyond that. This greatly affects the environment and climate change.

It is clear that the aggression launched by the rapid support militia, which enjoys regional support and local support of certain political forces, has caused massive environmental pollution due to the destruction of infrastructure, the increase burning of civilian property, encroachment on water sources and forests and forced displacement of the civilian population. These practices and violations have led to high levels of pollution in Sudan and possibly neighboring countries depending on the wind trend, leading to climate change and negative environmental impacts in the near future.

As we know, growing problems related to climate change, such as floods, droughts and rising temperatures, could have a significant impact on the daily lives of local people in Sudan. Therefore, finding urgent solutions to this problem is an urgent necessity to preserve the environment and preserve natural life in the region. Additionally, rainfall rates in Sudan, on which the majority of the population depends for agriculture and grazing, can be affected by these variables.

At the regional level, Sudan looks forward to cooperating with neighboring countries in a spirit of complementarity and solidarity to address the challenges of climate change and its negative impacts on the environment. Accordingly, all government and societal mechanisms capable of achieving these goals must be strengthened after allocating sufficient budgets and necessary funding to deal with this dangerous phenomenon that will affect the lives of local residents.

In his speech before the “COP 29” climate summit in Azerbaijan, the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, who heads the Sudanese delegation participating in the summit, highlighted the importance of implementing the Paris Agreement as a major priority. . Al-Burhan stressed that Sudan, like other countries, is suffering from the effects of climate change and the international community must work together to address it. Al-Burhan also referred to the aggression launched by the Rapid Support Militia in Sudan, which led to the deterioration of the environmental situation in the country. He also pointed out that the Sudanese government has taken many policies and measures and adopted plans and programs to address them. increase production efficiency and increase the rate of dependence on alternative energy. Additionally, despite the war, he prepared a national plan that includes projects for adaptation to climate change as part of sustainable social and economic development.

Practices resulting from wars, such as increased deforestation, internal displacement and land abandonment, have contributed to increased pollution resulting from remnants of war, which has led to the destruction of infrastructure and has exacerbated the environmental crisis in Sudan. Therefore, the international community must provide support to Sudan; First, by helping him to classify the Rapid Support Militia as a terrorist organization and to condemn the regional and local parties involved in supporting it with arms and in its political and media coverage. Second, Sudan must be supported in developing mechanisms to reduce harmful practices that lead to environmental pollution and destruction, and ensure the protection of Sudan's environment and natural resources.

Especially since our country is exhausted by this war which has been imposed on it and which has weakened its economic resources. Accordingly, the Sudanese government must take effective measures to protect the environment and sustainable development, as well as move forward in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, work to increase awareness of environmental issues and encourage innovation in the field of environmental solutions. The international community must support Sudan in this area and cooperate with it to find comprehensive solutions that contribute to achieving sustainable development and preserving the environment for future generations.

Therefore, the truth remains in emphasizing that Sudan is part of the international community and ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges. Therefore, everyone must work together to build a better and more sustainable world of security and peace. This leads us to recall that Sudan is actively participating in the “COP29” international conference on climate change, presenting its efforts and measures to reduce the effects of climate change on the environment. Governments of neighboring countries participating in the conference must also have the capacity to develop their climate strategies. Let's work together through a coherent and efficient work system to achieve sustainable development and preserve our country, our neighborhood and even the entire planet from any potential impact on the environment and climate.

May you always be well.
