Towards a sustainable environment in Sudan – Something for the homeland – ✍️ Mr. Salah Ghariba

There is no doubt that climate change has become one of the most significant challenges facing humanity as a whole. The effects of these changes are clearly evident in many parts of the world, including in Sudan, which suffers from harsh environmental conditions exacerbated by conflicts and wars. Environmental degradation in Sudan is not only a threat to the natural environment, but rather a direct threat to the livelihoods of millions of Sudanese people and threatens the stability and cohesion of society.

Environmental challenges in Sudan include desertification and agricultural land degradation. Desertification is considered one of the most serious challenges facing Sudan, leading to loss of arable land, increased rates of drought, and migration of people from affected areas. The causes of desertification are many, including overgrazing, tree cutting, unsustainable agricultural methods, and climate change. Sudan suffers from a severe shortage of fresh water, especially in rural areas, which affects agriculture, industry, and drinking water. The problem is exacerbated by pollution of water sources due to untreated sewage, industrial activity and intensive use of pesticides, mud brick manufacturing, and airborne dust, which contribute to increasing the rate of air pollution in Sudan. This pollution leads to many health problems, such as respiratory and heart diseases.

Young people are the backbone of the future and are the most affected by the effects of climate change. Their active participation in environmental protection efforts is therefore essential. Sudanese youth can play a central role in raising environmental awareness by organizing continuous awareness campaigns in schools, universities and local communities, and using social media to disseminate correct information on environmental issues, in addition to adopting environmentally friendly practices. By setting role models by adopting environmentally friendly behaviors in their daily lives, such as rationalizing water and energy consumption, recycling and using sustainable means of transportation, Sudanese youth can develop innovative projects that contribute to solving environmental problems, such as renewable energy projects. smart agriculture, waste management and demanding the right to a clean and healthy environment. Young people can put pressure on decision-makers to adopt effective environmental policies and allocate the necessary resources to protect the environment.

One of the practical and sustainable solutions is to rely on renewable energy. Sudan can benefit from its solar energy and strong winds to generate electricity, which helps reduce carbon emissions and save energy, and encourage farmers to use environmentally friendly farming methods, such as organic farming, vertical farming, soil conservation agriculture and the use of modern irrigation systems and efficient waste management systems must be developed, including regular waste collection, sorting, recycling and converting organic waste into fertilizers. Protected areas and biodiversity in Sudan must be developed. be protected by activating environmental laws and legislation and combating poaching and illegal logging.

The role of the media, civil society organizations and the government is that the various media play an effective role in raising environmental awareness, highlighting urgent environmental issues and providing positive role models for people who contribute to environmental protection. implement many environmental projects, such as awareness programs, afforestation projects and degraded land rehabilitation projects. The executive branch must also adopt clear and effective environmental policies, allocate sufficient resources to implement these policies and encourage community participation in environmental decision-making.

Environmental protection in Sudan requires the combined efforts of all parties, from the government to the private sector, civil society organizations and youth. We must all work together to build a sustainable future for our future generations.
